Duke's mouth—and his life—were hanging by a thread. A person has been identified as the attacker, although it appears unlikely that charges will be brought against him. Authorities claim there simply isn't enough evidence.
However, Duke's attack has spurred national outrage in Costa Rica and demands for tougher animal cruelty laws.President Luis Guillermo Solis himself was head to issue a statement supporting stricter laws against animal abuse.
A bill has been working its way through Costa Rica's legal system, and would mandate prison time—rather than just fines—for anyone convicted of animal cruelty.
In the meantime, Duke is doing well as he recovers from his injuries. He's also become a powerful symbol on social media for abused animals everywhere, with thousands of people from around the world expressing their support by posting pictures of their pets with the hashtag #FuerzaDuke.
"Duke is extremely happy," a spokesperson from Vida Animal Costa Rica tells The Dodo. "He is definitely enjoying every single second of his new life."
Hundreds of people in the country have also lined up on the streets to voice support for Duke--who just may be the world's bravest puppy.
Support for Duke and his medical recovery is desperately needed. Find out how to help here.
